Unicode Compressure
is a project in two forms: a web app by Daniel Temkin and a series of silk-screened prints on handmade paper by Grayson Bagwell.
The Unicode specification gives immediate access to more than a hundred thousand letters from hundreds of languages. Unicode treats all languages the same, whether they are widely used or no longer practiced: Cuneiform is as accessible as Arabic, Esperanto, Japanese weather symbols (such as the famous Unicode Snowman) and Mayan Heiroglyphs. Representing every symbol from each of these languages is as easy as calling the unique number that corresponds to it.
Like television, the Web familiarizes the exotic, bringing what was once foreign into our immediate space, which ultimately makes the strange bland. Unicode Compressure defamiliarizes these symbols and this underlying technology of the Web. The symbols are displayed much larger than they are ordinarily. They are also layered, overlapping transparently, which emphasizes their formal qualities. What they have in common become apparent along with features unique to their source languages.
In the Web version of Unicode Compressure, the symbols slowly degrade as the resolution is reduced. The letters jitter, as if exposed to great heat or pressure. Waves of pixelation pass through them as they become less distinct. This is done using only the default aesthetics of Unicode. The only graphic elements are the letters themselves.
The print version of Unicode Compressure degrades the symbols through chemical means. The screen is treated with emulsion degrader after being printed, so that each print contributes to a series of images progressively degrading. Like the Web version, the Unicode Compressure prints explore the entropy native to their medium: that of silk screen printing.
