∆ Adam Lion (Los Angeles) + Jack Herscowitz
Adam Lion is a percussionist dedicated to experimental music rooted within the traditions of composition and improvisation. Valuing idiosyncratic techniques, Adam explores new sonic frameworks involving agency, perception, immediacy, and constraint. Through composition Adam explores larger philosophical concepts such as the creation of structure through chance, cohesion through independence, and the borderlands between the raw materiality of sound and human cognition. At the core of this approach is a full embrace of the objective properties of instruments and sound itself. Of equal importance are the social, emotional, and metaphysical relationships that naturally arise during collaboration between performers, objects, and spaces. Adam creates systems which navigate these dynamics, uncovering unique sonic environments grounded within the immediate moment. This dichotomy between material constraint and autonomy reflects a dialectic which continually points to the same question- how can we use music to research these ideas?
Jack Herscowitz is a Chicago-based composer, improviser, and sound artist working across experimental music and art practices. Described as “the slow descent of the sun at twilight” (A Closer Listen), his current work investigates reduced musical materials or focused sound-producing actions through a committed process of transformation, underscoring change as an inherent and omnipresent truth and employing attention itself as affective material. Jack performs improvised live electronics on (mostly) digital instruments with groups Mystic Elevator and Castle Anthrax in addition to various solo improvisers. His solo performance practice draws from noise, glitch, vaporwave, and lo-fi aesthetics, exorcising the ghosts within mass-produced technology/culture and centering melancholia and anxiety as collective cultural moods.
